19 years of age, I am a full-time student and a full-time worker. I am an only child, with a mom name Michele and a father named Tom. I was originally born in New Jersey, but have lived in Ohio for most of my life. My hobbies are graphic design and webpage development, currently I have my own website/blog. I currently work at the clothing store Hollister Co. I am the full-time stock, which in other words, I run the stockroom.
My content area (at the moment) is Secondary Education: Mathematics. Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I have never wanted to be anything else, so teaching came natural to me.
Reflection to one of the five ISTE-NETS-T Standards for Teachers:
1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers: a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
Reflection: I believe this is one of the most important standards that a teacher needs to follow. Without engaging your students, without creating an environment which allows for the student to gain more knowledge, are you really considered a 'teacher' ? Giving that environment which allows for the student to understand and comprehend what is being taught allows for the brain to become a sponge, and allows the student to take away more knowledge than just reading a textbook or jotting down tons of notes. Giving that extra something special, whether it's making fun game and activities, or doing something that hasn't been done before, like going to a Math Exhibit, or something, allows for the student to truly understand why the subject is important, and it engages them and allows them to want to learn more about the subject. If you just give them sheets upon sheets of notes in a class period, then give a test at the end of the week, and then swiftly move onto the next chapter, the student has no motivation to want to learn and truly understand the material. Having a creative learning environment allows for the students to want to learn.
This standard can relate with what we have done in this class in particular in many ways. You, as the professor, have given us many activities to engage us in your classroom, such as projects, like the Lesson Plan project, and making us go home and do homework like Symbaloo and the seating chart. Giving us these websites, and allowing us to do it ourselves, rather than you printing something out and giving it to us, allows for us as students to learn how the internet works, what sites are helpful, and where we can go to better ourselves as teachers. Also, the Lesson Plan project really just us engaged not in just the classroom, but also got us engage in our major, and what we want to do with the rest of our careers. It showed us exactly what teachers have to do to make a suitable, yet engaging Lesson Plan.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers: c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
Reflection: This standard is especially important for teachers. Teachers when making a lesson plan need to take into consideration that each and every one of their students have different learning styles and techniques. When making a lesson plan, teachers need to incorporate all of these different styles to accommodate for all of their students. If they don’t do this, then some students may be left behind or not understand the material as well as others.
This standard has been incorporated into our classroom in a very awesome way. You, as the professor, have showed us places to go to better our careers, such as websites, within the classroom. This allows for all of us to see the sites. We don’t know if all of us have a computer at home, or even a cell phone. So this classroom, with all the computers and SMARTboard, allows for people who don’t have these things at home to view them, and actually use them.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers: b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation Reflection: I think this standard is really important in a student’s success. Teacher and parent interaction is very important in allowing a student to succeed. If a teacher doesn’t contact with the parents, then the parents will not understand and fully be engaged in their students schoolwork. With the introduction of e-mail, or more high tech cell phones, it makes communication between teachers and parents a lot easier. There isn’t really any communication between professors and parents in college now a days because college is mostly a student’s domain. So the parent-teacher communication is most important in high school, rather than college.
